Rape

Rape is a versatile feed crop for a range of stock types. In dry eastern areas of New Zealand like Canterbury, it is grown for finishing weaned lambs. It is also a good crop for dairy cows and beef cattle. The leaves are high in protein with a DM of 20 percent at maturity it is a quality feed. Compared to other Brassicas it has no bulb and produces very little stem.

Rape grows in the majority of New Zealand preferring a cooler temperature climate. It tolerates a range of soil fertility, preferring a pH level above 6.0 and free-draining soils. It is susceptible to water-logged soils.
