Chicory

Chicory is a perennial herb with a large tap root, the large leaves grow in rosettes and it has a blue-mauve daisy-like flower. Chicory is a popular addition to pastures for livestock feed with a high concentration of minerals and rapidly digested, deer, lambs and cattle achieve high rates of live weight gain on a Chicory dominant pasture.  It grows rapidly from October through to the end of April.

Chicory can be grown in a mix or as a stand-alone specialist crop. It is versatile in pasture mixes, tolerates soil acidity, and frequent grazings, it is also resistant to pests and disease. It is drought tolerant with a deep tap root for accessing soil moisture and trace elements.
