Description

Phalaris is a hardy blue-green perennial grass that grows well on drier soils and over autumn and winter months. Generally, Phalaris is slow to establish, although it will persist under hard grazing and treading once it is well established. A key feature of Phalaris is its excellent pest resistance. It is known to reduce grass grub in pastures, helping to provide protection for other grass and clover species in a mix. As a caution, when sowing Phalaris, it contains an alkaloid that causes a nervous disorder in grazing livestock known as Phalaris Staggers. For this reason, Phalaris needs to be mixed with other dryland pasture species.
