At Wesco, farming is in our blood. Since 1937, we’ve been part of New Zealand’s agricultural story either farming the land and growing crops or, helping farmers grow stronger pastures and healthier stock. What began as a family farm growing crops for export markets has grown into a trusted nationwide seed partner, supporting farms across the country with proven seed mixes, practical advice, and reliable supply.


Through the generations, we’ve held on to one belief: when farmers succeed, we all succeed. Today, that same hands-on knowledge, passed down and strengthened with modern innovation, helps us deliver the right solutions for every farm, every season.

1937

Roots in Canterbury

A family farm was founded in Cust, North Canterbury, named Savenger Downs. Trading was in the blood, with Sofis Larsen importing tyre tubes to sell locally.
1950s to 1970s

Growing the Farm

The farm expanded to 260 hectares, running sheep, beef, and deer. Lionel Senior joined in 1963, continuing the family's hands-on connection to the land.
Seed Mixes - generic, no product shots, no people, no buildings
1980s to 1990s

Turning to Seed

The focus shifted toward seed production, with crops grown and exported via third parties. In the late 1990s, Wesco purchased its own seed-cleaning plant, taking full control of quality.
2000s

Wesco Is Born

Lionel Jr launched Wesco Seeds, promoting seed mixes and Saxon ryegrass across the North Island, quickly gaining traction.
2010s to 2020s

Expansion and Innovation

Wesco grew nationwide, developing a wide range of seed mixes and delivering custom solutions to farms across New Zealand.
